In a continuing developmental capacity, serves as a professional meteorologist in the organization for meteorological issues affecting the agency or command's ability to accomplish its mission.

- Applies meteorological analysis skills and knowledge in matters involving terrestrial and space weather impacts on operations.

- Develops expertise on US Government, national, and international meteorological developments, capabilities, and techniques in the fields of meteorology and oceanography and evaluates emerging technology for application.

- Performs recurring assignments of increasing difficulty and complexity as directed by the supervisor or team lead.

- Provides meteorological support, advice, research, and analysis.

- Participates in special initiatives, studies, and projects.

- Participates in meetings, prepares and presents briefings, prepares written correspondence and other documentation.

Qualifications

Any individual who completed all requirements for a bachelor, masters or doctorate degree from a qualifying educational institution within the previous two years or will complete these requirements by 31 May 2025 meets the basic requirement to apply for the Recent Graduate Program;

-OR-

Any veteran released or discharged from active duty within the previous two years, but due to a military service obligation, was precluded from applying for a recent graduate position during any portion of the two-year eligibility period following completion of applicable degree, and not more than six years have transpired since completing the requirements for the degree

Education

This position has an education requirement. You MUST provide transcripts to support your educational claims. Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. http://www2.ed.gov/admins/finaid/accred/index.htmlBasic Requirements:

  1. Degree: meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science major that included:
    1. At least 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of credit in meteorology/atmospheric science including a minimum of:
      1. Six semester hours of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics;*
      2. Six semester hours of analysis and prediction of weather systems (synoptic/mesoscale);
      3. Three semester hours of physical meteorology; and
      4. Two semester hours of remote sensing of the atmosphere and/or instrumentation.
    2. Six semester hours of physics, with at least one course that includes laboratory sessions.*
    3. Three semester hours of ordinary differential equations.*
    4. At least nine semester hours of course work appropriate for a physical science major in any combination of three or more of the following: physical hydrology, statistics, chemistry, physical oceanography, physical climatology, radiative transfer, aeronomy, advanced thermodynamics, advanced electricity and magnetism, light and optics, and computer science.

    * There is a prerequisite or corequisite of calculus for course work in atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics, physics, and differential equations. Calculus courses must be appropriate for a physical science major.

You must have completed a 4 year course of study leading to a bachelor's from an accredited institution AND must have documented Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) at the undergraduate level in one of the following:

a) Class Standing - upper third of the graduating class based on completed courses in the college, university, or major subdivision;

b) Grade Point Average - 2.95 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on your official transcript or as computed based on 4 years of education or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of curriculum; OR 3.45 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in your major field or the required courses in your major field completed during the final 2 years of your curriculum. If more than 10 percent of total undergraduate credit hours are non-graded, i.e. pass/fail, CLEP, CCAF, DANTES, military credit, etc, you cannot qualify based on GPA;

c) Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society (note: freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this position). (If qualifying based on class standing or honor society membership, provide appropriate documentation).

AFTER PROGRAM COMPLETION:
  • Recent Graduates who are selected for conversion must have completed all requirements of the program successfully

  • Met the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) qualification standard for the position to which the Recent Graduate will be converted
  • NOTE: It is important to remember that eligibility for conversion does not guarantee that the Department of the Air Force will offer conversion.
